الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims at exploring the prominent linguistic features of the language used by the Jordanian members of Parliament during the year 2015.

It also aims at revealing the common procedures that are employed by parliamentarians to achieve their goals.

To this end, nine parliamentary debates were collected using video recording.

The researcher used content analysis based on Halliday and Hasan's (1976) framework of cohesion and also Austin's (1962) and Searle's (1969,1979) Speech Act Theory.

The results of the study reveal that parliamentary debates have their distinctive features that make them, in some way, different from those features of other talks or debates.

The most prominent linguistic features are lexical relations.

This includes lexical repetition, synonymy, antonym, hyponymy and collocation that are frequently used in parliamentary debates to achieve different political goals.

This study also reveals that the most widely used speech acts in parliamentary debates are: representatives, directives and expressives.

In addition, parliamentary debates have their distinctive features such as turn-taking, timing, topics, and setting.

Finally, parliamentary debates are argumentative in nature, thus parliamentarians employ different procedures to support and enrich their speeches such as code-switching, using proverbs, quotes from the Nobel Quran, and using the act of questioning or interrogating.
