الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims at investigating the problems and difficulties that Arab learners of English at Mutah University face when dealing with English progressive tenses.

Moreover, it aims to find out the effect of the first language (L1) on the second language (L2).

It has been noticed that the subjects of the study face great difficulties when using English progressive tenses (present, past and future).

Forty students of the second year / English language, at Mutah University were asked to write several paragraphs using the present progressive, past progressive and future progressive.

The collected data were categorized and analyzed to identify the errors that resulted from the use of those tenses.The study confirmed that most of the subjects were not able to use these tenses properly.

It seems that such difficulties can be attributed to the interference of their first language.
