الملخص الإنجليزي

Developing high yielding varieties adapted to drought could be achieved by understanding the magnitude of existing variability, proper characterization of the most important agro-morphological traits and their interrelationships with yield.

This study was carried out to assess the extent of variability, heritability and expected gain from selection in 231 spring barley genotypes from barley core collection for yield, yield components and drought related traits.

The collection was grown in two successive seasons (2014/2015 and 2015/2016) at two semi-arid locations in Jordan (Ghweer and Mutah).

Structure analysis using 6019 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers revealed that genotypes were separated based on row-type and geographical origin.

High levels of genetic variability were existed in grain yield, yield components and other traits related to drought.

Diversity index (H') values were more than 0.80, implying substantial level of variability are existing among genotypes.

Principal components analysis showed that grain yield, biological yield, straw yield, harvest index, and number of kernel per spike and number of kernels per plant explained most of the existing phenotypic variation in the population (49.61%) with high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation.

High phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variations combined with medium to high heritability estimates (h2= 0.34-0.94) for yield and yield contributing traits indicate high expected gain from selection.

Positive genetic correlations were observed between grain yield and yield components, emphasizing the effectiveness of indirect selection for improving yield.

Genotypes with early heading and maturity displayed higher yield, implying the importance of earliness under terminal drought.

Genotypes originated from West Asia and North Africa (WANA) and landraces displayed higher yield, indicating high potential adaptability to semi-arid locations.

The extensive variability existed in this study for yield, yield components and drought related traits opens the opportunity to select for desirable genes for improving barley performance under water limiting environments and to identify genomic region underlying genes with major effect on yield by genome wide association analysis.
