Aim: The aims of this study were to understand the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) among married Jordanian women, to identify the contributing factors of IPV as well as the coping mechanisms toward it, and to explore the consequences of IPV.

Design: An interpretative, qualitative approach was used to collect data from 10 abused Jordanian women, who were recruited from Dar Al-Wefaq al-usary during the period between October and November, 2016.

Method: Data was collected using semi-structured interviews.

All interviews were digitally recorded and thematically analyzed using color and file index method.

Findings: Analysis of the qualitative data revealed four main themes and subthemes.

First: “When I got married” which includes the marriage decision category and two subcategories: “Forced marriage” and “I fell in love”.

This theme showed how the decision to marry plays a role in the cycle of violence.

Second: The transition: “From a family home to a wrestling ring”.

It includes two categories: Forms of violence (physical, psychological and sexual), and Contributing factors (Financial, Cultural, sexual, lifestyle and legal factors).Third: The role of family, which includes two categories: “Rejection” and “A shoulder to lean on”, which showed that families of victims exhibit either rejection, divided into two subcategories - rejection for the victim herself or rejections for her babies - or support for their daughters either psychologically or financially.

Fourth: Consequences of violence on victims physically and psychologically, and gynecological impacts of IPV.

Conclusion: This study found that abused women in Jordan are suffering from a culture of IPV starting from making a decision to get married, and later going through a journey of agony until reaching the thought of suicide.

Therefore, there is a pressing need for a continuous educational program for the victims themselves and for health care professionals along with close social monitoring in partnership with legal institutions in Jordan.

There is a lack of institutional support to help those abused women and facilitate help-seeking behaviors.

Although some victims were educated and economically independent, this did not exclude them from violence.
