الملخص الإنجليزي

In This thesis, the researcher explores His Majesty King Abdullah II's persuasive strategies and ideologies employed in three international political speeches delivered in 2016 within Fairclough's (1989) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis approach and Halliday's (1985) Functional Grammar.

The researcher concludes that the speeches address two core issues: terrorism and the refugee crisis.

He found that His Majesty utilizes a number of persuasive strategies such as: creativity, intertextuality, nominalization, and presupposition besides creating a structural opposition between terrorists and the rest of the world by portraying the former as weak evils and the latter as strong looking-forward civilized peoples.

Furthermore, the researcher concludes that His Majesty urges his audience to adopt his stances through a number of further linguistic choices that assert his authoritative power and commitment towards his actions and thoughts such as over-using material and mental verb processes, strong deontic modality, and the intellectual, expert, and conversational genres.

His Majesty encourages the whole world to consider the war against terrorism as a global rather than a regional war that must be fought at all levels: diplomatic, military, ideological, social, and technological.

The researcher also explicates His Majesty's implicit ideologies such as co-existence, tolerance and mutual respect and cooperation.
