Investigating students’ ability to speak English : a case study of the students of faculty of education of the Red Sea University

The study aimed to investigating the ability to speak in English among the learners of English language at the Faculty of Education, Red Sea University particularly among Students who specialize in English in the English Department.

The study followed the descriptive analytical methods.

The tools used in the study were a questionnaire to both male and female students and an interview for English teachers.

the major finding of the study was that most students are afraid of making mistakes while they are communicating in English, hence they fail when they tried to speak English.

This was due to the absence of the activities which enable the students to pronounce words clearly and correctly.

Moreover, gradation in curriculum of teaching English is not convincing and the materials provided in it do not enable students to communicate with each other.

Finally, activities given by English Language teachers were not enough to enable students to practice English language perfectly well.

In the light of these findings, the research suggested some recommendations to solve these problems in order to improve the ability of the students to speak English correctly and fluently.
