Abstract.

Ornamental plant species in landscape Architecture are important tools for creating and controlling spaces, improving their environmental conditions and beauty in the urban environment.

The thorough knowledge about plant species and the identification of their environmental and visual characteristics is an important factor that helps planting designers in landscape architecture to achieve a high standard work professionalism.

On the other hand, having a checklist of ornamental plant species provides useful tools for exploring genetic resources of cultivated ornamental plants and may be equally interesting for horticulturists, agronomists, botanists, ethno botanists and other specialists of similar interest, and provides additional information on plant-human interaction.

During the four years: 2008 to 2011, we surveyed ornamental plant species that were used in landscape architecture projects in Makkah region (West of Saudi Arabia).

360 species that belong to 73 families were recorded in this study.

The environmental, visual and cultivation characteristics for all species were identified through field observations to the planting sites.

Results of this study were presented in a tabular format of alphabetical order according to families and botanical names.

The common Arabic names, the type and size of the plant used in landscape, cultivation and environmental requirements, fragrance and toxicity, propagation methods, species origin (native or introduced), dynamics used in landscape architecture projects were also mentioned.

The results demonstrated a high concentration on selecting introduced exotic species, which have showed success during the last period through their adaptation to the surrounding conditions, and a low focus on native wild flora species which have a high adaptation level to the natural conditions.
