الملخص الإنجليزي

The Qur’an uses many literary devices to convey its message and its moral principles; proverbs are considered one of these literary devices which contain wisdom, morals and Islamic values in a figurative and effective form.

This study attempts to investigate proverbs in selected Qur'anic verses and the methods used in translating them into English.

It will be divided into four chapters.

Chapter one is an introduction, where the aims of the study and hypotheses are set and the methodology adopted in conducting and organizing this study is explained.

In addition, the significance of the study and a brief review of literature are presented.

Chapter two defines a proverb and compares it to other literary devices such as, metaphors, similes...

etc.

In addition to its types and its characteristic features.

It examines proverbs from religious, terminological and philological perspectives to differentiate between the use and concept of proverbs in the general layman’s sense in comparison with the idiomatic Qur’anic one.

A reference to some strategies of translating proverbs is also presented.

Chapter three introduces the sample of the study that is twenty Qur'anic proverbs being compared with five different renditions.

An assessment and an analysis of the features and the characteristics of the selected Qur’anic translations are produced.

In addition, a classification will be made according to the strategy of translation being applied in order to examine the extent to which these translations were able to transfer the exact message of the Qur’anic proverb to the target reader TR and to what extent they were influenced by the cultural, religious and linguistic background of the translator.

The thesis ends with chapter four, which constitutes the conclusions and recommendations as well as suggestions for future research.

The present study has deduced that most of the selected translations tend to translate the Qur'anic proverbs literally, which often causes deficient transference of its message to the target reader.

Besides, the sectarian biases appear clearly in the selected translations.

In addition, translators suffer confusion in rendering the Qur'anic proverbs into similes, which causes a loss of meaning in the target text.
