الملخص الإنجليزي

A Joke is an essential part of everyday communication, commentary, and an important component of innumerable literary works, films and art in general.

It is often rooted in specific cultural and linguistic contexts, but it is also an indispensable part of intercultural communication and mass entertainment.

When trying to translate jokes, culturally opaque elements and language-specific devices are expected to make the translator's work more difficult, while some elements are ultimately untranslatable.

Jokes pose serious problems in translation owing to their unique linguistic and cultural structures.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the ability of translating jokes in Arabic into English.

This study attempts to establish the tools available for translating of jokes.

It provides a general theory of how jokes can be translated, in terms of wordplay or punning, allusions and verbal irony.

It also aims to describe and criticize the shortcomings in the English translations of the jokes.

It also puts forward some suggestions and recommendations which can be beneficial for translators to achieve better translations.

By evaluating the process of translating jokes in Arabic into English, the present study attempts to answer the following questions: What is the best method to translate jokes in Arabic into English? To what extent can the translation be correspondent or even equivalent to the original text? What are the main pitfalls and shortcomings translators commit when translating jokes? Although many studies and books on translating jokes into English are available, this study, to the best knowledge of the researcher, is the first that investigates the translatability of Goha's Jokes in Arabic into English
