الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims at investigating the degree of compliance between the social and humanistic values in English textbooks and the Jordanian social values from the point of view of the teachers of English language.

The researcher raised the following questions: 1-What are social and humanistic values included in the English Language textbooks from the point of view of the teachers? 2- What is the degree of compliance of the Jordanian social and humanistic values in the ninth grade English textbooks from the point of view of the teachers? The sample of the study consists of (64) teachers, (34) English language teachers of the Basic Level and (30) English language teachers of the Secondary Level selected from the Directorate of Al-Ruseifa schools.

A questionnaire was designed to collect these that are consisted of (20) selected values distributed into two parts: (11) values related to the general humanistic values and (9) values representing the Jordanian social values.

Validity of the instrument was assured by following the comments of the panel of jury who kindly refereed the stated items.

Reliability of the instrument was also assured by conducting a test-retest to a selected sample of teachers of English language from outside the sample of the study.

Data analysis revealed the following results as answers to the study questions: The social and humanistic values in the English textbooks from the point of view of the teachers were as follows: Respect, Responsibility, Peace, Honesty, Preservation of environment, Freedom, Commitment to laws and regulations, Justice, Devotion, Equality and Vineyard.

The degree of compliance of the humanistic values in the English textbooks with the Jordanian social values from the point of view of the basic stage teachers was 46.5% - 40.3%, and the compliance with the humanistic values to the Jordanian social values from the point of view of the Secondary stage teachers was: 76.3% – 64.0%, which means that the humanistic values appear more frequently other than the Jordanian values.

The following recommendations were suggested by the researcher according to the findings of the study: - Researchers conduct more studies on the subject of values in the books of the English language for their importance to students.

- The authors include the Jordanian and Arab/Islamic values taking into consideration the importance of cultural issues in EFL textbooks -Activating the role of school activities to increase awareness of values.

-The MOE to gives, more training to teachers of English on the issues of the local values.
