Factor V leiden G1691A mutation in patients with cerebral infarction

Cerebral infarction is a serious neurological disease with the sudden loss of blood circulation to an area of the brain, resulting in a damage to the brain tissue and corresponding loss of neurologic function, which caused by a clot blocking of blood vessel and the subsequent shortage of oxygen and nutrients to the brain tissue.

This retrospective study was done to assess the influence of Factor V Leiden (G1691A) mutation on the hypercoagulability, thrombosis and ischemic stroke.

The present case-control study was carried out on 50 patients with ischemic stroke.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis were used to identify the FV Leiden G1691A mutation.

The results of the present study showed that the incidence of blood clotting factor V Leiden mutation was found in 8 (16%) patients, from which 7 (14%) patients had heterozygous mutant and 1 (2%) had homozygous mutant for FV, the remaining patients (84%) were don't have FV Leiden (G1691A) mutation.

In the frame of this work we delineate that the FV G1691A mutation play a significant role in the pathogenesis of cerebral infarction.
