Synthetic approaches and pharmacological evaluation of some new acetamide derivatives and 5-benzylidene-2-(2, 6-dimethyl-phenylimino)‎-thiazolidin-4-ones

2-Chloro-N-(2,6-dimethyl-phenyl)-acetamide was utilized as a starting materialfor the synthesis of some new acetamides incorporating various secondary amines and carboxylate moieties.

Newly synthesized acetamidederivatives were obtained using nucleophilic substitution reaction as a simple synthetic strategyin polar aprotic solvent at room temperature.

Furthermore, 2-(2,6-Dimethyl-phenylamino)-thiazol-4-one which was prepared through the reaction of 2-Chloro-N-(2,6-dimethyl-phenyl)-acetamide (1) with potassium thiocyanide, on treatment with variousaldehydes inglacial acetic acid using sodium acetate as a catalyst results in the formation of new 5- substituted benzylidene-2-(2,6-dimethyl-phenylamino)-thiazolidin-4-one.

All the newly synthesized compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activities against two identifiable strains using cup plate method, and most of the synthesized derivatives revealeddiscernible antibacterial activity.

Supplementary to these, the constitutions of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed on the basis of their IR and 1H-NMR spectral data.
