The Ouargla region is among the main date-producing areas in Algeria.
The date palm is a source of products of great diversity where the date is traditionally considered a staple for indigenous population, but also a commercial product where the whole of the date palm mass is used for various purposes.
This study aims at valorising oasis terroir products from the date palm, and aims to highlight the economic importance of different uses, with a view to consider a heritage development strategy.
Nine areas have been investigated, known to have maintained so far knowledge and know-how in the use of all biomass, as well as its integration into the daily life of the local population.
As a result of field work, it emerges that the dates and the date palm organs, constituting the raw material, are available through very important tonnages.
A significant range of by-products from the date palm organs is used in basketry (utensils, cabinet making, gardening materials) and as livestock feed for high income.
However, products based on dates, are of a high-value culinary, medicinal and cosmetic nature, are considered organic and are beginning to have their place in the current commercial channels, which could bring a new dynamic to the local and national economy.

La région de Ouargla est parmi les principales zones productrices de dattes en Algérie.
Le palmier dattier est une source de produits d’une grande diversité où la datte est traditionnellement considéré comme un aliment de base pour la population autochtone ; mais aussi un produit commercial où l’ensemble de la masse phoenicicole est utilisé à des fins diverses.
Cette étude vise à valoriser des produits de terroir oasien issus du palmier dattier, et a pour objectif de mettre en évidence l’importance économique des différentes utilisations et ce, dans la perspective d’envisager une stratégie de développement patrimonial.
Neuf zones ont fait l'objet d'investigation, réputées d'avoir maintenu jusqu’ici, un savoir et un savoir-faire dans l’usage de toute la biomasse, ainsi que son intégration dans le quotidien de la population locale.
Des suites du travail de terrain, il en ressort que les dattes et les organes de palmier dattier, constituant la matière première, sont disponibles à travers des tonnages très importants.
Une gamme non négligeable de sous-produits, issue des organes de palmier dattier est utilisée en vannerie (ustensiles, ébénisterie, matériels de jardinage) et comme aliments de bétails permettant d'avoir d’importants revenus.
Cependant, les produits élaborés à base de dattes, sont de nature culinaire, médicinale et cosmétique à haute valeur, considérés biologiques et commencent à avoir leur place dans les circuits commerciaux actuels, ce qui pourrait insuffler une nouvelle dynamique à l’économie locale et nationale
