Electrocardiographic changes in patients on regular hemodialysis in Assiut University hospital

Background: Cardiorascular diseuse (CVD) is Ihe leading cause of morlality among end stage rénal disease (ESRJD) patients un regiilar hemodialysis (HD).

Knowledge ahout CVD in ESRD is crucia/ hecause ofthe unprediciahle progressive nature of the disease and increased risii of prématuré death from cardiovascular coniplications.

Aiin of the study: To déterminé the altérations in electrocardiograph (ECGj ofHD patients and its relationship with clinical and laboratory variables.

Patients and Methods: One hundred ESRD patients on regular HD in Diaiysis Unit of Internai K4edicine Departriient of Assiut University Hospital were enrolled in this study.

They were divided into two groups: group I: patients with arrhythmia, conduction disturbance or ischemic ECG changes and group H: patients wilhoiit these cardiovascular chcmges according to Iwelve leads ECG findings.

Resnlts: There is significant increase in âge, dialysis duration.

atrial and ventricular enlargement and conduction defects in arrhythmia patients.

In addition, there is significant increase in hypertension, chronic heart failure, lower limb ederna, atrial and ventricular enlargement in patients with conduction defects and those with ischemia.

Conclusion: ESRD patients on regular HD had high frequency of abnormal ECG changes including différent arrhythmias, ischemia and conduction defects with increased presenting clinical manifestations of heart failure with advancement of âge and dialysis duration.
