الملخص الإنجليزي

The scope of this paper is twofold: first, analyze the actual relationship between CFA (pegged to the French currency) and French currency from 1975 to 2015 on economic growth in the WAEMU zone.

Second, discuss some economic implications and recommendations for the WAEMU governments in the context of a new common currency by 2020.

The Real Exchange Rate has been computed and captured the introduction of Euro in 1999.

Secondary data have been retrieved from the World Bank database and processed using a Panel data analysis.

The results showed a significant positive relationship between the Real Exchange Rate (RER) and economic growth of WAEMU countries.

Thus, empirically speaking CFA currency is not harming the economic growth of this region.

However, as supported by previous studies, the hitch might be elsewhere.

Then, the paper also discusses some other relevant factors WAEMU policy makers should seriously consider before merging with WAMZ to launch the new currency.

The results are valuable mainly for both West African policy makers and foreign investors.
