الملخص الإنجليزي

Sufi practices are widespread within the Moroccan Muslim community.

The historical presence of zāwiyas and Sufi orders as religious and social centers is an indicator of the deep influence of the Sufi shaykhs on people of their community. Morocco has been described as a land of one hundred thousand saints.

This characterization has symbolic meaning, a reference to an effective pattern of religiosity associated with people’s attachment to sanctuaries and zāwiyas.

In this sense, various roles and functions have contributed to the organizational performance of the zāwiyas, both on the social, religious and spiritual level. Zāwiyas are still present and have not lost their power to contribute to social cohesion by serving their local communities.

The zāwiyas and Sufi orders’ activities are active in the Moroccan religious landscape and play a particular role among the youth.

The purpose of this research is to observe young people experiences in and relations with various Sufi saints and the practices surrounding them.

It shows that Sufi practices are a central form of religiosity among a great number of young Moroccan devotees.

This research is based on extensive fieldwork, which was conducted at the shrines of Shaykh al-Kâmel in Meknes and of Moulay ‘Abdal- Salâm Ibn Machich in Jbel l’Alam, in addition to Tijani zāwiya in Tangiers where 68 of young Moroccans were interviewed.

It aims to analyze the various ritual functions of traditional mystical practices and their influence on the young practitioners.

It also highlights the function of shrines beyond their immediate ritualistic value by demonstrating how zāwiyas and saints’ shrines serve as spiritual and psychological centers for therapy
