Biomass burning is one of many sources of particulate pollution in Southeast Asia, and the smoke haze related to biomass burning is a recurring environmental problem in Southeast Asia which affects air quality not only in the source regions, but also in the surrounding areas.

This study reviews the high particulate events in Southeast Asia including Malaysia, such as the 1994 smoke haze event in Singapore-Malaysia-Indonesia, the 1997 / 1998 / 2006 Indonesian peat and vegetation fires and the 2002 dust storms in the region of China, Japan and Korea.

The causes and impacts of these events also discussed.

The study showed that the particulate matter emitted by the vegetation and peat fires in Indonesia are an important factor and causing exceedances of ambient air quality thresholds on the Southeast Asian region.
