As a result of globalization, searching for identity of the place becomes a topic that interests many researchers and architects.

Therefore, they start to look back to traditional buildings in each place to learn from the successful existing models which represent the identity of their location and inhabitants.

In addition, the special situation of the Gaza strip makes it necessary to do a profound study regarding its architectural identity which has been badly affected by the unstable political and therefore economic and social conditions.

Thus, this study focuses on the existing housing models in the Gaza strip to determine the extent to which they represent Gaza identify.

Evaluation process is applied on these models and this evaluation is based on the determination of identity factors in any place: Location, Time, Social life and Economy, as well as the determination of people and place requirements in the area of study.

Four main types of residential buildings are identified in Gaza according to their building materials and techniques : Old houses, Concrete houses, Asbestos houses (lightweight houses) and new mud houses.

The study found that the performance of each of these building types varies from one identity factor to another.

In the location factor old house achieves the best results while in the time factor, modernity, concrete building is the best.

On the other hand, new mud house achieves less result than the previous two types in most factors except the economy where its results are the best.

Asbestos house fails to achieve good results in any of the four factors.

As a result, the study has found that no one of these houses are presenting the identity of Gaza and its people in a perfect way in all aspects and it showed that there is a great need to rethink of the current procedures applied in all building types in both their design and construction as well as the need of redeveloping the imposed planning regulations in the Gaza strip.

So, the study has drawn a development frame work by gathering the strong points of each type, developing them and adding more suggestions.

This suggested frame work proposed many ideas in terms of construction materials, building techniques, environmental performance and building and planning regulations.
