الملخص الإنجليزي

-One hundred and ten bitter vetch pure lines (genotypes) were isolated from 11 landraces collected fromdifferent eco-geographical region of Jordan.

Bitter vetch genotypes were evaluated for yield (seed and herbage), thousand seed weight, herbage related traits including (leaf to stem ratio) leafiness and leaves and seeds mineral and crude protein contents.

Seed yield ranged from 3.85 to 13.44g/plant and dry herbage yield ranged 2.84 to 9.07g/plant.

Plant height ranged from 21.61 to 34.68cm and the leafiness ranged from 0.93 to 3.21.

Crude protein contents ranged from 10.42 to 22.75% in leaves and from 24.69 to 30.31% in seeds.

Phosphorus (P) ranged from 0.28 to 0.64% in leaves and from 0.21 to 0.70 in seeds, while calcium (Ca) ranged from 2.24 to 3.73% in leaves and from 0.13 t0 1.02% in seeds.

Most traits displayed diversity index more than 0.80.

Such wide ranges of traits' distributions for bitter vetch genotypes indicate an ample chance to select individual genotypes with desirable traits.

For phenotypic traits, the first principle component (PC) explained 49.82% of the total variation with strong load on herbage yield, while the second component explained 25.36% of the total variation with high load on leafiness.

For minerals and crude protein contents related traits, the first PC explained 25% of the total variation with a strong load on crude protein content, while the second function explained 15.85% of the total variation with high load on Ca and P in contents in seeds.

Heritability estimates were medium for herbage yield related traits and leafiness (0.33 to 0.44), while extremely higher heritability estimates were observed for mineral and crude protein contents in leaves (0.65-0.95) and in seeds (0.53 to 0.98).

Such mediumto high heritability estimates indicate that these traits are under additive gene effect and reliable selection is possible for bitter vetch genetic improvement.

Overall, results from this study indicate that Jordanian bitter vetch landraces are a rich source of variation for traits with economic importance for plant breeders and bitter vetch growers.
