الملخص الإنجليزي

The crop improvement can be achieved by searching new sources of genes for yield and adaptation.

In this study, the genetic variability was assessed in 110 bitter vetch pure lines isolated from eleven geographical regions in Jordan.

The results revealed a high level of genetic variation among bitter vetch lines for yield and yield related traits.

Seed yield, biological yield, straw yield, number of seeds per plant and thousand seed weight ranged from 0.63 to 3.95 g/plant, 5.11 to 16.92 g/plant, 3.92 to 13.53 g/plant, 7.82 to 275.34, 14.58 to 79.07 at Mutah location and from 2.14 to 8.09 g/plant, 9.15 to 28.94 g/plant, 5.94 to 23.00 g/plant, 41.47 to 168.18 and 41.78 to 55.04g at Ghweer location, respectively.

Shannon diversity index (H') for plant height and thousand seed were 0.84 and 0.80, respectively, while remaining traits displayed H' ranging from 0.55 to 0.76.

Heritability estimates for yield and yield components were medium to high (0.32-0.85), indicating the effectiveness of selection for these traits either by direct selection for yield per se or indirect selection for secondary traits that correlated with yield.

The average proportion of polymorphic loci and the Nei' gene diversity over landraces were 73.38% and 0.24, ranging from 57.14 to 80.00 and from 0.198 to 0.274, respectively.

The first principle component explained 29.22% of the total variation in bitter vetch set with strong load on yield traits (biological yield, seed yield, straw yield and number of seeds per plant).

Such wide ranges in phenotypic values and considerable polymorphism observed using RAPD indicate that Jordanian bitter vetch landraces are mixtures of homozygous lines.

Population structuring revealed that 80% of the variation detected within landraces and 2.65% and 16.47% occurred among landraces and among geographical regions, respectively indicating the high level of gene flow between farmers.

Such results imply more attention should be given to the variation exists within landraces in future breeding programs, while for ex situ conservation, more attention should be given to sample more individuals within landraces rather than conservation of more landraces that distributed over different geographical regions.

Results of this study revealed that Jordanian bitter vetch landraces are highly heterogeneous and there is a high possibility to select genotypes with desirable traits for bitter vetch breeding
