الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed at identifying the role of social and economic factors in the prevalence of the phenomenon of begging in the Jordanian society as well as detecting whether there are statistically significant differences between the average responses of the study sample individuals towards the role of social and economic factors in the prevalence of the phenomenon of begging in the Jordanian society according to the variation of familial and qualitative characteristics.

In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the social survey method was used and the questionnaire was used as the main tool for data collection.

The study population consisted of the individuals who are interested in begging within the age category (12-18) years of both genders who have the Jordanian nationality, within the boundaries of the Greater Amman Municipality in Amman, with a total of 330 male and female beggars.

The study sample consisted of 60 male and female beggars representing about 18.2% of the study population.

The study used the methods of descriptive statistics as well as the one-way variance analysis to analyze the data.

The study concluded that the overall level for the role of social factors in the prevalence of the phenomenon of begging in the Jordanian society from the beggars' perspective was high with a mean of (3.767) and that the most important social factors leading to the prevalence of begging are related to the families suffering of poverty, family disintegration, as well as the incidence of diseases and disabilities that prevent them from working and earning their living.

The study also concluded that the overall level for the role of economic factors in the prevalence of the phenomenon of begging in the Jordanian society from the beggars' perspective was high with a mean of (3.814) and that the most important social factors leading to the prevalence of begging are related to the beggar's desire to gain money in a rapid and easy way as well as the high prices of goods and the inability to buy them, in addition to the length of waiting periods for getting a job.

In the light of the study results, the study recommended a number of recommendations, including: providing more employment opportunities to beggars who are able to work by rehabilitating and training them in vocational centers, raising the minimum rate of wages and intensifying the campaigns of capturing the beggars, especially the children as well as intensifying the process of monitoring them by the specialized committees in the Ministry of Social Development.
