الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims at shedding light on the applications and impacts of phonetic pause.

This will be mainly done with special reference to one type of pause in the Holy Quran usually referred to as Repulsive or Prohibited Pause.

The intended meaning of the relevant verses is affected as a result of pause mislocation.

The present thesis provides interpretation of these verses in terms of Jackendoff's (1983-2012) theory of Conceptual Semantics.

This theory serves as the basis for determination of the incorrectness of pause location to the extent that the speaker or reader violates one or more conditions described by Jackendoff (to appear).The researcher employs a new method of interpreting the verses that are orthographically marked with prohibited pause sign.

It is found that wrong occurrence of pause inside utterances will lead to meaning distortion.

This is so because of the different readings of the same utterance or sentence.

Therefore, it is recommended that speakers and/or readers pay more attention to the way they segment their speech.
