الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed at investigating the avoidance behavior of phrasal verbs by EFL learners at Mu`tah University, and at providing further evidence in the context of structural differences between L1and L2, as well as, the inherent semantic complexity of L2.

To achieve the purpose, this study tried to answer the following questions: 1.

Do EFL students at the English Department at Mu`tah University adopt avoidance behavior in productive skills (i.e.

speaking, writing)? 2.

How and to what extent do the semantic properties of phrasal verbs affect the avoidance of phrasal verbs? 3.

How and to what extent does the learner`s native language ( Arabic) affect the avoidance of phrasal verbs? The population of the study consisted of (496) students studying English Majors and literature at the English language Department at Mu`tah University in the academic year 2009/2010.

The sample consisted of (240) students who were selected randomly.

In order to answer the research questions, a questionnaire, as well as, a test containing two parts were developed by the researcher and distributed to the participants of the study.

The findings of the study revealed that most EFL learners at Mu`tah University adopt avoidance behavior of phrasal verbs in both speaking and writing skills due to difficulty in pronunciation and use and, because they are absent from Arabic language.

Thus they tend to avoid using phrasal verbs such as “brush up” and resort to one-word equivalents such as “improve”.

Also, the study revealed that EFL learners adopt avoidance behavior of phrasal verbs because of the inherent semantic properties of English language.

The study confirmed that there is no effect caused by L1 (Arabic) on the avoidance behavior of students.

In light of the findings of the study, a set of recommendations were stated to EFL learners, researchers, EFL curriculum designers, and EFL instructors at Mu`tah University
