الملخص الإنجليزي

The current study was conducted to examine the effects of transient hypothyroidism on thermoregulatory and growth potential of goat kids. Twenty eight weaned goat kids were allocated into four treatment groups in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with a completely randomized design structure.

The two experimental factors tested were goat breed (Shami, SHM; or Baladi, BAL) and two levels of the transient goitrogen, 6-N-Propyl-2-Thiouracil (PTU, 20 mg/kg BW/day or a placebo control, CON, 0 mg/kg BW/day).

Treatment with PTU was initiated on Day 0 and lasted for 4 weeks then was terminated while other measurement collection continued until Day 47.

Therefore, the four treatment groups were SHM/CON, SHM/PTU, BAL/CON and BAL/PTU. The 28 kids included 18 SHM (initial Avg.

BW = 44.2 ± 0.42 kg) and 10 BAL (initial Avg.

BW = 30.6 ± 0.65 kg) goat kids of uniform age (13 months).

Kids were housed in individual pens and the PTU was administered daily by gavage.

Feed and water were supplemented ad libitum for 47 day.

Body weight, BW gains and ADG were recorded on Days 0, 28 and 47.

Temperatures of rectum (Trec) and skin (Tskin), along with respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) were measured daily at 1100 hours.

Also, blood was sampled on Days 0, 14, 28 and 47 to monitor levels of total thyroxin (T4), glucose, total protein and cholesterol. Thyroxin was suppressed (P < 0.05) during PTU treatment in both BAL and SHM groups.

Rectal temperature decreased only in BAL, while Tskin was not affected (P > 0.05) by PTU in all kids.

Respiration rate and HR decreased by PTU in BAL and SHM.

Growth parameters were greater in SHM kids, while PTU had no effect on those parameters in any breed. Glucose and cholesterol were not affected by PTU while total protein increased (P < 0.05) by treatment only on Day 14.

Treatment with PTU resulted in marked depressions in thermophysiological parameters of BAL but not SHM goat kids.

Although SHM exhibited superior growth performance to BAL, PTU did not cause significant alterations in any growth parameter measured
