الملخص الإنجليزي

Buildings in Jordan consume a significant amount of energy for heating, cooling and lighting and other purposes.

Therefore, improving energy performance of the existing building in Jordan will significantly reduce national electrical consumption.

In this work, an existing building in Amman was redesigned moving towards low energy performance.

In doing so, the proposed design compared and compiled existing standards and their criteria and found differences and similarities with focus on the insulations of the building, the type of windows ( single and double glazing ), shading of building windows, ventilation and heat recovery systems, the type of lighting, solar water heating, water management system and photovoltaic system as a source of electrical power to generate free solar electricity to cover the electrical load demand of the building.

Also, a suitable economic evaluation criterion was used to estimate the payback period of all systems applied.

The results showed that energy saving lamps can reduce the energy use by about 16%, and reduce the heating load by up to 25%, achieved by using thermal insulation with new windows type, and 67% by using exhaust air heat recovery system and by applying shading system for the East and West windows orientation.

Also by appling Water Management System the water consumption of the building was reduced by 30%, and by appling active solar water heating system the percent of reduction in the consumption was reduced by 70%.

Finally photovoltaic system was proposed to generate the electricity needed by the building.

It was found that PV system generates 7384 kWh/yr which covers the house needs.

Finally the total saving in energy for the whole house is found to be 78.5% which approaches a near zero energy building
