The American researcher Robert Delfino of St.
John’s University tackles two main convictions held by Western atheist professors such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris.
The first conviction is “scientism” which considers that science alone is able to provide us with complete and reliable knowledge of reality.
The second is metaphysical naturalism which denies the presence of transcendental entities.
In this essay, the writer focuses on metaphysical naturalism which is accepted by new atheists and other naturalists, and aims to answer the following question: Can metaphysical naturalism provide a sufficient basis for objective ethical values? The writer clarifies that the answer is in the negative and then discusses a number of serious dilemmas inherent in the naturalist explanation of the basis of morality.

Dans "l'échec du système moral en Occident", le chercheur américain Robert Delfino de l'université St.
John's, traite deux convictions fondamentales chez les philosophes de l'athéisme en Occident, comme Richard Dawkins et Sam Harris.
La première est le scientisme qui considère que la science seule est capable de nous fournir un savoir absolu et authentique de la réalité.
La deuxième est le naturalisme métaphysique, qui dénie l'existence d'êtres surnaturels.
L'auteur de l'article souligne le naturalisme métaphysique agréé par les nouveaux athéistes et autres naturalistes, et vise à répondre à la question suivante: le naturalisme métaphysique peut-il fournir un fondement suffisant pour les valeurs morales objectives? L'auteur répond par "non", et se débat sur les problèmes réels dans l'explication naturaliste du fondement de la morale.
