الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this study is to examine the language of literary texts based on the pragmatic theories, Cooperative Principle and Grice s maxims.

This research aims at describing the types of non-observance maxims found in the Death of a Salesman drama script, and the intentions of nonobservance maxims Grice called to applying the theory of cooperative principle and its related maxims to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation between interlocutors.

The four maxims are quantity, quality, relation, and manner.

The researcher used the qualitative approach in describing the non- observance of the maxims.

Hence, the researcher collected data from the dialogues and utterances in the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller.

The results of this study show that: firstly, all the four maxims are broken by the characters of the play Death of a Salesman, with the relevance maxim mostly broken.

Secondly, the types of non-observance in the play under study used by the characters are: flouting maxims, violating maxims and opting out of the maxims.
