Caregivers of patients with schizophrenia are led to invest emotionally, cognitively, socially and materially, which can gradually cause a burden.
This study aims to assess the level of burden and depression in family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and identify risk factors affecting them.
We conducted a cross-sectional study including thirty caregivers of patients followed for schizophrenia.
We used the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale and the Caregiver Reaction Assessment to assess the burden and the Beck Depression Scale for depression screening.
The burden was moderate or severe in 83.3% of cases.
Two-thirds of caregivers were depressed.
A higher burden score was significantly associated with lack of motivation, aggressive behaviors in schizophrenic patient and depression.
Schizophrenia may cause a heavy burden and a significant psychological distress.
Several factors seem to be involved, inherent to the disease, the caregiver and the social context.
الملخص FRE
Les aidants des patients atteints de schizophrénie sont amenés à investir tant sur le plan affectif et cognitif, que social et matériel, ce qui peut progressivement causer un fardeau.
L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer le niveau du fardeau et de dépression chez les aidants familiaux de patients schizophrènes et de repérer les facteurs de risque associés.
Notre étude a été menée auprès de 30 aidants familiaux de patients schizophrènes.
Le fardeau a été évalué par l’Inventaire du Fardeau de Zarit et le Caregiver Reaction Assessment.
La dépression a été dépistée par l’échelle de Beck.
Le fardeau était modéré à sévère dans 83,3% des cas.
Les deux tiers des aidants étaient déprimés.
Un plus lourd fardeau a été corrélé à l’absence de motivation à l’aide, la présence d’agressivité chez le patient schizophrène et à la dépression.
La schizophrénie est pourvoyeuse d’un lourd fardeau.
Plusieurs facteurs semblent y être impliqués, inhérents à la maladie, à l’aidant et au contexte social.
