الملخص EN

This research investigates how Arabic glottal stop is produced and perceived, and why it occurs so frequently before word-initial vowels in Arabic and English languages.

Arabic glottal stop can be found word-initially, either as an obligatory or optional allophone.

Glottal stops are usually but not always accompanied by ventricular incursion.

Glottal stops are necessarily glottal but not necessarily ventricular sounds.

Glottal stops are consonants in languages as diverse as Arabic and English.

Glottal refers to the glottis which plays a central role in phonation, but also can function as an articulator.

Closure release of the vocal folds, for example, can constitute a stop analogous to a bilabial or velar stop.

The researchers hope that this study will help to understand the case of glottal stops in Arabic and English languages.
