Ten Lactobacilli which showed high antagonistic activity against oral pathogen were selected among 111 lactobacillus strains and their immunomodulating effect was studied in both naïve and lipopolysaccharied induced murine macrophage cell line J774.1.

Lactobacilli showed significant differences in the profile of released cytokines among the strains.

All Lactobacillus strains exhibited TNF-α/ IL-10 ratio above 24:1, while one strain Lactobacillus acidophilus (K44/3) exhibited high ratio which was 110:1 indicating that this strain is the strongest for stimulating of pro-inflammatory cytokines
