Due to the demand for high data rate systems to meet recent and future development in wireless technology, such as 4G, 5G and LTE, this has led many authors to investigate the performance of Free Space Optical (FSO) communications due to its ability for producing high data rate systems.
Free Space Optical communications has the ability to offer 1-2 Gbits/sec over disatnces ranging between 1- 5 km, it is also cost effective and needs no licensing for deployment.
However, FSO performance is affected by channel turbulance (fading), weather conditions and pointing errors which can severly degarade the system performance.
In this thesis, performance of multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) FSO system is considered, where the channel statistics is assumed to be quasi static, thus, allowing the channel statistics to be viewed as being constat over at least a couple of symbols.
The optical signal is defferentially encoded phase shift keying (DEPSK) signal with heterodyne detection in which the phase noise between at least two consecutive symbols is ignored in the analysis.
It is assumed that the optical signal is tarnsmitted via independent ?- transmit apartures and received via ?-receivers over Gamma- Gamma atmospheric turbulance channel.
In addition, it is also assumed that the ?- apatures are viewed by each receiver and the ? received signal components are combined using equal gain combining technique at the receiver.
Performance of three systeme metrics are cosidered in the analysis over weak to strong turbulance channel conditions.
Closed form exressions are achieved for each of the system metrics in terms of the Miejer-G function, which takes into account the turbulance strength parameters, the MIMO level and bit energy-to-noise power spectral density ratio.
The three system metrics considered are: outage probability, out rate and avergae capacity.
Numercial results are displayed as a fucntion of MIMO level and turbulance strength versus bit energy-to-noise ratio.
Finally, the closed form expressions were verified by comapring the produced resluts with previously published for the case of SISO system, in addtion, the attained results using the derived closed expressions were compared against results produced by numericlly integration for the same system and channels parameters.
Comparison of results showed excellent agreement, and thus proves accuracy of the closed form derived expressions
