A novel nonlinear controller for the multilevel Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) based on cascaded two level inverter is presented in this work.

Stability analysis for the nonlinear system is conducted using the Lyapunov’s theorem.

Then, the nonlinear controller is derived using the Lyapunov’s direct method.

The proposed controller controls the reactive power exchanged between the STATCOM and the grid.

Also, the controller is able to operate the STATCOM in both capacitive and inductive modes.

At the same time, the controller also control the active power exchanged between the STATCOM and the grid, in order to charge and regulate the two DC link capacitors voltages, without the need for any external circuits.

The optimization study was conducted using Jaya algorithm, in order to find the optimum value of the two DC capacitors' voltages.

The proposed Lyapunov based nonlinear controller, reduces the number of parameters needed to be tuned to three parameters, rather than eight, when conventional linear PI controller for the CTLI multilevel STATCOM is used.

Simulation studies are carried out using Matlab/Simulink to verify the proposed Lyapunov based nonlinear controller, while the controller performance is investigated in steady state conditions.

Moreover, the systems' behavior is tested in transient conditions, such as, change in the reactive power demand and grid voltage variation.
