Cohesion and coherence in internet articles : a case of two articles

This paper investigates the extent to which coherence and cohesion are used in internet articles.

It also aims at identifying frequently used cohesive devices.

The sample of this paper consists of two internet articles: one about Honey (http://www.barnetbeekeepers.org.uk/sections/Bee%20 Products/honey.htm) and the other about Acupuncture (https://www.quack-watch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/acu.html).

Analyses of the target internet articles show us that the more cohesive devices the writer uses, the more coherent the text will be.

Among cohesive ties, lexical cohesion is the most frequent type used, followed by parallelism.

Conjunction, ellipses and reference follow respectively.

Reiteration is widely used among lexical cohesion devices.

Repetition of the same item is the most common type of reiteration.

Additive conjunctions are the most frequent types of conjunctions used in the target internet articles.

Nominal ellipsis is the most frequent kind of ellipses.

Moreover, among different types of references, personal reference occupied the highest percentage (70%).
