Serum triglycerides, cholesterol, cholylglycine and lithogenic index in diabetic patients with and without gall stones

Scrum triglycerides (TG), cholesterol and cholylglycine (bile acid conjugate) levels had been studies in non insulin dependent diabetic patients (NIDD) without complications and those complicated with gall-stones and coronary heart disease.

All diabetic subgroups had significantly higher values of serum TG, cholesterol, and cholylglycine than control group.

The maximum values of cholylglycine was noted in diabetic patients with gall stones.

Serum lithogenic index was significantly elevated in diabetic patients particularly those with gallstones, as compared to control groups.

Scrum cholesterol was significantly elevated in complicated diabetic patients but not in non complicated group as compared to control subjects.

Elevation of serum lithogcnic index is related to the elevated serum cholylglycine.

It can be concluded that determination of serum cholylglycine and suggested lithogenic index could be of value in predicting diabetic patients susceptible to gall stones.

No previous study was found related to scrum lithogenic index.
