Discourse Analysis : towards an understanding of the role of CDA in modern Languages

Critical applied linguistics is a recently emerging discipline which investigates education, regulation and the use of language studies in exploring the power of language in society.

This study seeks to understand how power is constructed culturally and socially within the context of modern languages, especially the hegemony of the American English from a critical perspective.

The paper addresses issues of language hegemony and linguistic imperialism, World Englishes trends, critical language policy research trends, etc.

The paper ends with research implications for language teaching approaches.
