Illegal migration has become a phenomenon often discussed in various international meetings as it extended beyond humanitarian, social and economic considerations whereas its issues are more and more linked to other security issues as for terrorism and organized crime.

In this context, the South Western area of the Mediterranean has witnessed an intensification of illegal migration towards the Northern shores of this sea particularly after the adoption of the closed borders policy initiated by the EU countries following the Shengen agreements circumscribed to the only EU states, considering in reality that the neighboring states of the southern shores constituted a direct threat , ignoring at the same time the fact that those states have become themselves a crossing area of intensified movement of illegal migration from Africa, as they assume by themselves the negative effects of such a phenomenon.

Therefore, what is the European policy towards illegal migration concerning the Southern area of the Mediterranean? And what are the instruments and mechanisms adopted to put an end to this problem?
