الملخص الإنجليزي

This study examines the strategies used by Arab translators in rendering force image schematic-metaphors found in Arabic political discourse.

Based on Johnson's theory of image schemas (1987), the researcher applied this descriptive analytical study on metaphoric expressions selected from three speeches of the former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi during his presidential term in 2012 and their juxtaposed translations are taken from IKHWANWEB which is the Muslim Brotherhood's only official English website.

Providing the proper framework, the force image schematic metaphors are selected, categorized, described, and analyzed in the first stage while in the second and third stages the researcher examined IKHWANWEB translation strategies used in handling these metaphorical expressions, taking into consideration both crosslinguistic and cross-cultural features, and making use of the cognitive theory of metaphors to provide insights on the source texts’ ideological underpinnings.

The findings of the study show that force image schematic metaphors were adopted heavily in Morsi's speeches particularly the enablement and attraction image schemas.

Such focus on these two kinds, I contend, is related to the contextual and social aspects that restricted the speaker's own choice of metaphors.

The findings also show an over reliance on literal translation strategy constituting 73.6% of the used translation strategies.

In fact, literal translation used here provides an irreproachable meaning in the target language refuting the claims about its insufficiency in translating metaphoric expressions.

The study also manifests how the translations of force image schematic metaphors are influenced and manipulated by contextual, ideological and cultural factors.

I recommend that translators pay more attention to the contextual and cultural aspects of the source text, vary their translation techniques in the same text, have a reasonable background about the two languages and cultures, and not underestimate the importance of the pragmatic factors in translating from Arabic into English.

Further studies are recommended on the use of force image schema in different types of texts as well as the factors that may affect their usage and translation.
