First record of aerobic bacteria isolated from nasal samples of clinically healthy barbary sheep (ammotragus lervia)‎ in giza zoo with special reference to pasteurella species

Bacteria isolated from the upper respiratory tracts of healthy Barbary sheep in this study were identified to establish a basis for knowledge and comparisons as first study to be done on this endangered species of wild animals.

A total of 26 bacterial isolates from Barbary sheep (8 individuals) were evaluated.

Most (no = 15) isolates were gram negative, and 11 isolates were gram positive.

Information regarding the habitat and pathogenesis for those organisms were discussed.

The two major microorganisms isolated were identified as pasteurella sp., and Corynebacterium pyogenes.

Enterobacter, Moroxella, Pasteurella.

Haemolytica, Pasteurella.

multocida, Pseudomonas, Corynebact.

Pyogenes, Staphelococcus aureus, Staphelococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus Bovis were isolated in percentages of 11.5 %, 7.7 %, 15.4 %, 11.5 %, 11.5 %, 15.4 %, 7.7 %, 11.5 %, and 7.7 %, respectively.

Interpritation of the presence of these above mentioned bacteria especially Pasteurella in healthy Barbary sheep and their importance as opportunistic pathogens been discussed.

Attention has been paid for the importance of these bacteria for the free ranging Barbary sheep in the Egyptian deserts and the possible role of infection transmission between both domestic and wild sheep.
