الملخص الإنجليزي

The construction field is said to be one of the most dangerous fields in the world with a high record of injuries, accidents and deaths.

To mitigate this unacceptable trend in the site, practices of safety management is being undertaken by construction organisations to reduce if not exclude hazardous events.

In the developing countries in the Middle East where Jordan is located, high occurrence of construction related accidents, injuries, and deaths occur.

Also, a large population of employees are risky to a significant number of practices of safety related issues that may lead to situations where worker's safety is threatened.

Often times this exposure can be referred to the poor occupational practices of safety management.

This study was aimed at investigating the practices of safety management in the construction sites of contractors in the Jordanian construction field.

Employing a quantitative strategy, the study surveyed construction companies in Jordan, especially in Amman the capital of the Kingdom.

Results from the survey shows that only a few practices of safety management are commonly implemented by contractors.

These includes: Communicating practices of safety and information to workers; Engaging with workers about safety issues; and informing employees about the danger in the site before starting the work.

Practices of safety management that are not commonly performed by contractors include: Providing practices of safety supervisors in the site; Assessing the efficiency of workers and subcontractors; A designated practices of safety department; Providing training programmes for safety manager(s); Reviewing and updating the risk assessment during construction in the sites; and undertaking the risk assessment for work packages/operations before they start.

The findings thus highlight the lack in commitment of the practices of safety in the construction sites in Amman.
