The problem of water scarcity and the consequent impacts on various social, agricultural and industrial sectors of development is one of the most important problems that hinder sustainable development.

Therefore, it has gained the worldwide interest and occupied a great deal of the concerns of the international community and the United Nations development programs.

Water scarcity was on the top of the objectives list, and desalination is one of the important key issues that suggested to fill the increasing water deficit, but its accompanied environmental impact has to be reduced, by investigating its causes and work to address or replace them with the available environment friendly means, and take procedures that will reduce secondary pollution.

In this article we review the importance of desalination as a sustainable source of water and the outline of pre-treatment in the desalination system and its environmental impact.

We review the most important impact, and suggest preventive procedures to reduce it.
