Study on GSI and HSI of Portunus pelagicus at two polluted areas along the coast of Alexandria, Egypt

Seasonal variations of gonadosomatic index and hepatosomatic index of Portunus pelagicus at two polluted sites along the Mediterranean Coast of Alexandria, Egypt, were investigated.

Males at Abu-Kir and the Eastern Harbour reached their full maturation during winter, while females reached their peak during spring.

Maximum hepatosomatic index values were attained for males and females at both regions during spring.

A clear inverse relationship was detected between GSI and HSI indexes in males of Portunus pelagicus at the two different polluted areas along the coast of Alexandria, Egypt.

An unclear relation between the two indexes was observed in females during different seasons.

With respect to sexes, significant differences were observed between males and females in GSI and HSI values.

With respect to regions, the present results showed that more or less both regions had similar environmental conditions with no drastic or significant differences.
