الملخص الإنجليزي

Medical waste management is of great importance due to its infectious and hazardous nature that can cause undesirable effects on humans and the environment.

The objective of this study was to examine the medical waste management practices of El Shifa and Al Aqsa hospitals in Gaza Strip.

The study employed mixed method of quantitative and qualitative including questionnaire survey which include 246 respondents who were selected randomly, workshops and interviews with facility managers and stakeholder, field observations and literature reviews.

In regards to the current practices, the results showed that both hospitals does not quantify medical waste , where 53(31.4%) of respondents stated that medical waste is separated in each department , the site visits also indicated that the segregation of medical wastes into infectious medical waste and non-infectious medical waste is not conducted according to World Health Organization ( WHO) standards or any specific rules and standards ,42(54.5%) of cleaner said that the bags are filled with more than there capacity, all cleaners 77(100.0%) stated that trolley is used for inside transportation and from the hospital building to the storage area or municipal container,51(66.2%) of respondents said that medical waste is stored temporarily in the hospital .

All of them reported that , the storage area inside the hospital is not suitable in terms of ventilation, lighting and easy access.

In term of occupational safety, all cleaners wear a special dress while performing their work but most of them 48(94.1%) reported that the clothes are not protective.

The main treatment method used in the final disposal of infectious waste is incineration.

Non-infectious waste is disposed of using land disposal method .

The hospitals do not provided training for doctors and other personnel about medical waste management and their potential hazards, while the cleaners have received training from official infection control unit with regards to medical waste management.

To improve medical waste management practices in Gaza Strip the study suggested that there is a need for quantify the amount of medical waste generated in each unit of the hospital periodically, the WHO standards in medical waste management must be followed and the Ministry of Health (MOH) in partnership with relevant stakeholders should develop and set up clear plans and policies for proper management and disposal of medical wastes.
