Contraction is a term used in linguistics to refer to the process or result of phonologically reducing a linguistic form so that it comes to be attached to an adjacent linguistic form, or fusing a sequence of forms so that they appear as single form.

Whereas formal as part of a system of ‘formality’ of expression, referring to a level of language considered appropriate to socially formal situation.

This study investigates some of informal contractions which are used in spoken English in conversations between friends or members of a family.

The problem is related to the misunderstanding between new friends due to the use of certain contractions with the appropriate level of formality.
