It is generally known that the Arab dictionary has reached a prosperous period on the early centuries following the Islam inception, in that time many famous dictionaries were written as El Ain of El Khalil and The Arab tongue of Ibn Nadhir…etc., and many ideas on lexicography were introduced mainly in the prefaces of some dictionaries.

Then the Arab world was afflicted by enormous difficulties above all the social troubles that had bad consequences on the dictionary field.

Meanwhile, in Europe the research was encouraged since the renaissance in lexicology and in lexicography in which for example the studies were very varied; so we could find among many others things : headword arrangement, the form of definition… Thanks to some Arab scholars, a new vision to the way of producing dictionaries is implemented.

Rifa’a al Tahtawi was the first scholar to have been influenced by the French methods in studying language and he returned with all this to Egypt
