الملخص الإنجليزي

Nutrient release from legume crop residue is important to N cycling and the success of conservation and sustainable farming systems.

And with shifting preferences of consumers towards healthier food, organic food demand has been on the rise for the past two decades.

This increased demand has created an opportunity for farmers to shift from conventional to organic production.

Organic materials are therefore being tested as cheaper alternatives but there are knowledge gaps on how effect of legume residue to increase sweet potato yields in Northern Malaysia.

However, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mungbean residue as green manure on sweet potato yield planted in two different conditions.

The experiment was arranged in split plot in a factorial design with four replications.

The treatments consisted of one level of mungbean residue with control treatment; and two growth conditions of sweet potato namely: open field and greenhouse.

The results showed application of mungbean residue significantly increased all characteristics of growth (plant length, stem diameter, total branch number, leaf numbers, fresh shoot weight, leaf area and dry shoot weight) and yield characteristics (number of tubers, tuber length and tuber diameter) compared to control.

Open field condition increased all characteristics of growth and yield compared to greenhouse condition.

Treatment of mungbean residue under open field condition gave highest value 19.66 mm, 35.37 branch.

plant-1 , 429.5 leaf.

plant-1 , 1183g.

plant-1 , 13727.4 cm2 , 243.51 g.

plant-1 , 14.5 tuber.

plant-1 , 15.05 cm and 630.5 g.

plant-1 for stem diameter, total branch number, leaf numbers, fresh shoot weight, leaf area, dry shoot weight, number of tubers, tuber length and yield, respectively, while treatment of mungbean residue under greenhouse condition gave highest value in diameter of tuber (25.65 mm).

The results showed the potential of using mungbean residue to increase growth and yield of sweet potato planted under open field and greenhouse condition.
