The colonial French authorities gave the name of Oranian Zone (Oran Provence) to the old ottoman ruling area of Algeria.

Considered to be one of the most geographically, economically and demographically important areas, the department of Oran reaches more than 67.262 km², it is expended from the Mediterranean sea in the north to the Sahara desert in the south, and from the Moroccan borders in the west to the central Provence around the capital Algiers in the east.

After the end of the occupation war period and the beginning of the settlements era (1830-1871) The Oranian Province had seen intensified investments by applying a typical French colonial system including the administration, railways, ports and establishing new cities, not only for the French settlers but for many other Europeans, especially Spaniards.

The Province represented a paradise for the French economy, capitals were founded, agriculture was modernized, mines were exploited, and the flourishing of the French colonial development and economic growth was at the expense of the Algerian people.

The French colonialism tried various strategies to colonize Algeria and destroy its economy, but that couldn’t happen if they did not follow well studied political strategies, to make that work, the French colonizers used every aspect of law and military instrument and strategies, which resulted in controlling the Oranian zone, an area of major concern to the French.

As a result, the Oranian people were thrown out of their lands.
