According to the author, there is no general linguistic theory capable of resolving all the problems of applied linguistics.
The teaching of languages is a special field and necessitates choosing between numerous methodological hypotheses, according to one’s needs.
With this end in view, the author presents two concepts posed, at the university of Rennes, by Jean Gagnepain : the concepts of GRAMMAR and of RHETORIC.
Operative in the analysis of the ordinary human speech, the dichotomy Grammar/Rhetoric also allows one to define the teaching process of mother-tongues and foreign languages.

II n’y a pas, selon l’auteur, une theorie linguistique generale susceptible de resoudre tous les prdblemes de linguistique appliquee.
La pedagogic des langues est un domaine sp&ifique qui nous oblige a choisir entre les multiples hypotheses methodologiques en fonction de nos pro-pres besoins.
Dans cette optique, 1’auteur presente deux concepts poses, a l’universite de Rennes, par Jean Gagnepain : les concepts de grammaire et de rhetorique.
Operatoire pour l’analyse du discours quotidien, la dichotomie grammaire I rhetorique permet egalement de definir le travail pedagogique dans l’apprentissage des langues maternelles et etrangeres.
