Collocation and idioms: similarities and differences

This paper focuses on two facts that are collocations and idioms.

Its purpose is to survey different linguistic views towards these phenomena and their categorizations.

On one hand, the term collocation indicates groups of words that frequently seem in the same context.

On the other hand, the term idiom merely means a unit which operates as a single unit and whose sense cannot be worked out from its separate parts.

The aim of this paper is an attempt to provide an adequate background knowledge for those who are interested in these semantic phenomena.
