Impacts of water characteristics changes on the distribution of water plants in lake Burullus, Egypt

This study was conducted to evaluate the impacts of water characteristics changes on the growth and distribution of water plants present in lake Burullus protected area.

Najas armata, Ceratophyllum demersum, Pistia stratiotes and Myriophyllum spicatum growth rate were declined and completely disappeared from the eastern part of the lake and became very rare across the lake as a results of clearing and shallwing process of this part of the lake which leads to increasing in water salinity, depth, dissolved oxygen and decreasing in biological oxygen demand with changeable pH values.

Water depth, TDS, salinity, ammonium and phosphate were the key factors that control the growth and distribution of aquatic macrophytes in lake burrullus.
