Abstract EN

Turkey in 1928 AD had its own national motives and international dimensions in the minds of the leaders of this nascent republic (the Kemalists).

the republic that was founded out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, which continued to use the Arabic script until its end.

Atatürk- the founder of the Republic of Turkey- considered the idea of switching to the Latin alphabet as the backbone, and the essential basis for ensuring the survival of the fledgling state.

as the language, as he sees it, reflects the history, culture and heritage of its nation.

hence, Atatürk linked national independence with language liberation from the control and restrictions of foreign languages.

in the following pages, the researcher discusses the concept of language acquisition planning in Turkish language, and the practical measures that were taken during the transition from the Arabic alphabet towards the Latin alphabet.

due to the nature of this topic, the researcher applies a descriptive and a historical approach, and discuss the topic according to its successive historical developments.
